Depleting soil nutrients through frequency and timing of hay cutting on floodplain meadows for habitat restoration and nutrient neutrality

چکیده
Floodplain meadows support a high level of botanical diversity because the nutrient inputs from flood sediments are balanced by offtake via an annual hay harvest, leading to neutrality. This prevents build-up nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) depletes excess nutrients, which mitigates eutrophication in catchment areas reductions biodiversity through competitive exclusion. A replicated field trial was undertaken floodplain central England, with aim comparing potential throughout growing season single or double-cut system, determining when haymaking should occur maximise nutritional value hay. Additionally, farmer perspectives were gathered investigate practicality implementing second cut. The results revealed that summer cut may be sufficient balance inputs. However, double-cut, where harvest replaces autumn grazing, has actively lower N P levels, removing 8.69 g m−2 0.80 P. Maximising time between cuts system provides greatest opportunity for removal. Temperature is key driver plant growth. relationship accumulated thermal calendar date England advanced around two weeks 1961–1990 1991–2020. Delayed cutting under agri-environment scheme restrictions increasingly detrimental advancing seasons, due removal single-cut increased Taking first at mid-summer peak potential, currently 20–30 June offers deplete nutrients. Whilst farmers identify practical financial concerns make prohibitive some cases, this could overcome by, e.g., demonstrating higher-than-expected

Impact of regional species pool on grasshopper restoration in hay meadows
Agri-environment schemes are the most widely adopted political measure to maintain and restore farmland biodiversity in Europe. However, abiotic and biotic factors often limit the success of ecological restoration. Among the biotic factors, the size of the local and regional species pool is a major constraint. This is only well documented for plants. We therefore wanted to know if a small regio...
متن کاملRestoration of floodplain meadows: Effects on the re-establishment of mosses
Vascular plants serve as target species for the evaluation of restoration success as they account for most of the plant species diversity and vegetation cover. Although bryophytes contribute considerably to the species diversity of meadows, they are rarely addressed in restoration projects. This project is a first step toward making recommendations for including mosses in alluvial floodplain re...
متن کاملthe effect of functional/notional approach on the proficiency level of efl learners and its evaluation through functional test
in fact, this study focused on the following questions: 1. is there any difference between the effect of functional/notional approach and the structural approaches to language teaching on the proficiency test of efl learners? 2. can a rather innovative language test referred to as "functional test" ge devised so so to measure the proficiency test of efl learners, and thus be as much reliable an...
